There are many ways to define recovery. Many of us

There are many ways to define recovery. Many of us understand that it is a very individualized path, requiring an individualized approach. Allowing each person to invest in what positive change means to them maintains that persons autonomy.

This builds trust, and keeps us moving forward along that path of recovery. Demanding abstinence forgoes autonomy and misses the steps between active use and cessation. There are many points along that path where the Red Project comes in. Reducing harm, preventing HIV and Hep C, reversing and preventing overdoses, HIV case management, etc.

Each clean syringe, question answered, and dose of #Narcan distributed makes a difference.

Regardless of what medication(s) you may take - they’re important! Running your full course of antibiotics, staying on psych meds, adhering to an HIV medication regimen, etc. are all vital to maintaining a good quality of life.

Thank you to our HIV Care Team member Nikita for reminding me that using positive direction is more beneficial for our brains. “Remember” to take your meds is more effective than “Don’t forget!”

Today is #NationalHIVAIDSAgingAwarenessDay, which is notable because people living with HIV (PLWH) tend to age slightly earlier.

With a global total in 2018 of over 7.5 million PLWH over 50 years of age, this is significant (CDC). PLWH as they age tend to experience higher rates of cardiovascular disease, kidney failure, liver failure, osteoporosis, cancer, and memory problems.

This is not meant to scare anyone - this information and day of awareness are present to encourage those living with HIV to maintain healthy and active lifestyles, stick to their medication regimen, and continuously live the most balanced lives they can. All of these factors reduce the impact of HIV on an aging individuals body.
