Positive Choices

Positive Choices

Coming This Fall

Starting this Fall, we will be piloting a program called Positive Choices. This program, funded by the Michigan State Medical Society, will offer a space for people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) to socialize, connect, learn and support one another. This program will be facilitator led, peer directed, educational, transformational and downright fun. We want to re-invent the model of an HIV “support group,” and bring in some innovative, structured, and dynamic ways to help people living with HIV/AIDS to get more of what they need to prevent the spread of the virus.

We believe that people living with HIV/AIDS have a future, unlimited power, options and choices.

A recent state-wide needs assessment of persons living with HIV/AIDS uncovered some staggering statistics: about 50% of people struggle with practicing safer sex, feelings of hopelessness about intimate relationships and telling friends/family about their HIV status, almost 70% stated that counseling/support to help practice safer sex would be useful, and an overwhelming 96% responded that opportunities to socialize with other HIV+ people would be useful.

This program is free and will include book discussions, expert presenters, workshops, potlucks, outings, special projects, massage, acupuncture, distribution of safer sex supplies, and opportunities to be trained to speak-out and educate the community regarding HIV/AIDS.
